Who is Cate?

Cate:

That’s me.  I really like cooking, eating, lattes, good beer, running, dogs, travel, and good books.

I was born in Portland, Oregon, which is a truly fabulous city packed with nice people and good food. However, after 18 years in Oregon, I left for college in sunny California and stayed there to get a B.S. in Biology, a multiple subject teaching credential, and a husband named Mike.

Mike and I had been married about a year when we started talking about moving abroad.  We weren’t exactly sure where we wanted to go, but ended up buying one-way tickets to Thailand in January, 2009.  We spent a few months teaching in Thailand and Korea, and traveled in the UK, Ireland, Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was an absolutely amazing year that really shaped how I approach both cooking and life in general.

Although we’re now (temporarily?) settled back on the central coast of California, I’m sure we’re not done traveling. The list of places I want to visit is now longer than it’s ever been!

World Kitchen:

That’s my kitchen. I’ve always been drawn to different cuisines from around the world, and love to experiment with different ingredients and techniques from other cultures.

I fell in love with cooking when I was 12 and haven’t stopped since. I try to stay away from packaged food and too much refined flour and sugar, but I also believe in moderation so there will be butter and white flour and all those other foods you’re “supposed to” stay away from, in small (and sometimes not-so-small) amounts.

I stopped eating meat in November of 2009 for health, ethical, and environmental reasons. I still make some things with meat for Mike, so there may be meat-containing recipes showing up from time to time. I also LOVE fruits and vegetables, and am trying to explore more options using beans and whole grains, so those feature prominently in a lot of things I make.

I am a huge fan of the community aspect of food blogging, so I’d love to hear from you! You can email me with questions, comments, recipe ideas, or just about anything else at catesworldkitchen@gmail.com. Thanks for reading, and happy cooking!

  • Wow, you are so lucky! I got bit by the travel bug in high school and went to Croatia and Brazil. Then I got married and had a baby– that kind of puts things on hold. Have fun teaching in Korea!

Your grandmother Betty Wise wrote us about your blog in her Christmas letter. World cuisines, baking, and cooking interest me a lot. Your blog is fascinating. Keep up the good work!

Cate – Congrats! Finally a web site with recipes that I spent hours just browsing (and putting on the menu for the week)! I travel a lot and half of what I like to do is eat and cook everything along the way. (fried bamboo worms in Thailand). You’ve got a fan in Breckenridge, Colorado!

  • Hi Cate,
Just stopping by to say thanks for ‘adopting’ me.

  • Love the blog, and your awesome story.
I just started a blog too, and am always on the lookout for more kitchen inspiration. Thanks so much for sharing!

  • Love your site and what you’re doing. Great to see you’re using Asian influences in your cooking. Head on over to my blog for some ideas on veggies. My background in teaching word processing and many other hats have helped me with figuring out how to make cooking creative and fun vs following recipes. I know this is how I enjoy cooking and it’s what excites me to share it with others.

  • Hi Cate, I like your site, keep it up. Will keep your site on my blogroll. :)
